AeroPress Brewing Guide

AeroPress coffee brewing

What You'll Need

  • AeroPress and paper filter
  • Kettle
  • Digital scale
  • Timer
  • Freshly roasted coffee beans
  • Burr grinder
  • Stirring paddle or spoon
  • Mug

Standard Method (Regular Position)

Coffee

17g

Water

240g

Ratio

1:14

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Heat water to 90-95°C (195-205°F).
  2. Place a paper filter in the AeroPress cap and rinse with hot water.
  3. Attach the cap to the AeroPress chamber and place it on your mug.
  4. Grind 17g of coffee to a medium-fine consistency (similar to table salt).
  5. Add the ground coffee to the AeroPress chamber.
  6. Start your timer and add 50g of water to wet all grounds. Stir gently for 10 seconds.
  7. Add the remaining water up to 240g total.
  8. Place the plunger on top to create a vacuum seal and prevent dripping.
  9. At 1:15, remove the plunger and stir the coffee gently one more time.
  10. Replace the plunger and begin pressing down with steady pressure.
  11. Press until you hear a hissing sound (about 30 seconds of pressing).
  12. Your coffee is ready! Add hot water to taste if you prefer an Americano-style drink.

Inverted Method

Many coffee enthusiasts prefer the inverted method for more control over brewing time.

Coffee

18g

Water

220g

Ratio

1:12.2

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Heat water to 90-95°C (195-205°F).
  2. Place the plunger slightly into the AeroPress chamber and stand it upside down (plunger on bottom).
  3. Grind 18g of coffee to a medium-fine consistency.
  4. Add the ground coffee to the inverted AeroPress.
  5. Start your timer and add 40g of water. Stir for 15 seconds.
  6. Add the remaining water to 220g total and stir again briefly.
  7. Wet the paper filter and place it in the cap, then secure the cap on the AeroPress.
  8. At 1:30, carefully flip the AeroPress onto your mug.
  9. Press with steady pressure until you hear a hissing sound (about 30 seconds of pressing).
  10. Your coffee is ready to enjoy!

Brewing Variables to Experiment With

  • Grind Size: Finer for more extraction, coarser for less.
  • Water Temperature: Higher temperatures extract more, lower temperatures less.
  • Brew Time: Longer steeping increases extraction.
  • Agitation: More stirring increases extraction rate.
  • Coffee-to-Water Ratio: Adjust based on desired strength.

Recipe Variations

Competition Style (Alan Adler's Method)

Use 14g coffee, 200g water at 80°C. Add all water at once, stir, and press after 1 minute.

Iced AeroPress

Use 20g coffee, 100g hot water, and 120g ice in your mug. Brew with the standard method directly over the ice.

Concentrated AeroPress

Use 20g coffee with only 100g water. Brew with the standard method and dilute with hot water to taste.
