Local Coffee History
For most of its history Beijing was a tea city, and coffee arrived mainly through hotels, embassies, and the international community in the late 20th century. The 2000s brought the first wave of chain coffee shops along with independent cafés near the university district of Wudaokou, where students and a growing expat population made coffee part of everyday life. In the 2010s a new generation of Chinese baristas and roasters, many of them trained abroad, opened small roasteries and espresso bars in the hutongs, and Beijing has since become one of mainland China's leading specialty coffee cities.
What Makes It Special
Beijing's coffee scene is defined by its setting: many of the best cafés occupy converted courtyard houses and narrow hutong storefronts around Gulou, Wudaoying, and Dashilar, a short walk from the Forbidden City and the Drum and Bell Towers. Other clusters thrive in the international Sanlitun district, the converted factories of the 798 Art District, and the tech hubs of Zhongguancun, where cafés double as workspaces for startups. Proximity to Yunnan, China's main coffee-growing province, gives local roasters direct access to domestic beans, and competitive home-grown chains keep pushing independent cafés to stand out on quality.
