Coffee Culture in Bengaluru
Local Coffee History
Bengaluru is the capital of Karnataka, the state that grows most of India's coffee. Legend has it that coffee came to India in the 17th century when the Sufi saint Baba Budan planted seeds in the Chikmagalur hills, a few hours from the city. For generations Bengaluru drank strong South Indian filter coffee in darshinis and Udupi restaurants, and India's first big café chains were born here in the 1990s. Over the last decade the city has become the heart of India's specialty coffee movement, home to many of the country's best-known roasters and a large community of trained baristas.
What Makes It Special
Being so close to the coffee estates of Chikmagalur, Coorg, and the Baba Budan Giri hills gives Bengaluru roasters direct relationships with growers and access to fresh, traceable lots. The city's tech workforce and mild year-round climate support a busy café culture, with clusters in Indiranagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, and Jayanagar, where cafés double as workspaces. Old neighborhoods such as Basavanagudi and Malleshwaram keep the filter coffee tradition alive, and the Coffee Board of India, headquartered in the city, adds to its reputation as India's coffee capital.
