Coffee Culture in Bali

Local Coffee History

Coffee came to Indonesia with the Dutch in the late 17th century, and plantations soon spread across Java, Sumatra, and Bali. In Bali's highlands, farmers grew arabica on the slopes of Mount Batur in Kintamani under the traditional subak system, the cooperative irrigation and farming network that is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. For a long time most locals drank kopi Bali, finely ground coffee brewed directly in the cup. Since the 2010s, tourism and a large community of digital nomads have driven a boom in specialty cafés and local roasteries across the south of the island.

What Makes It Special

Bali's coffee scene is spread across several towns rather than a single city: the surf town of Canggu and neighboring Seminyak are packed with roasteries and all-day brunch cafés, Ubud offers cafés among rice terraces and jungle, and Denpasar is home to a growing number of local coffee bars. Kintamani arabica, grown at high altitude and often intercropped with citrus, is one of the few Indonesian coffees with a protected geographical indication, and many roasters buy directly from farmers there. Bali's large coworking community has also made cafés central to daily life, with many designed as comfortable places to work.
