Coffee Culture in Niš
Local Coffee History
Niš, the birthplace of Roman emperor Constantine the Great, came under Ottoman rule for several centuries, and with it arrived the coffee house, or kafana, along with the habit of drinking strong domaća kafa brewed in a džezva. Coffee remained a central part of social life through the Yugoslav era, with long conversations over a cup in cafés along the main streets. Over the last decade a small but dedicated group of local roasters and baristas has introduced specialty coffee to the city, opening third-wave cafés alongside the traditional kafanas.
What Makes It Special
Niš is compact and walkable, and much of its café life is concentrated in the center around the 18th-century Ottoman fortress, the pedestrian Obrenovićeva Street, and Kopitareva, a short street known for its cafés and restaurants. As Serbia's third-largest city and a university town, it has a young population that keeps cafés busy from morning until late at night. Specialty cafés here stay friendly and affordable, and many roast their own beans or work with roasters from Belgrade and Novi Sad.
